How Online Counseling Works

Counseling by video, sometimes called teletherapy or telehealth, has become a common way to meet with a counselor. For many people it is easier to fit into life than traveling to an office, and that matters on an island or anywhere a long drive is involved.

What you need

  • A phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone
  • A steady internet connection
  • A private place where you can talk freely
  • Headphones, if others are nearby

What a session is like

You receive a link before your appointment and join at the scheduled time. From there it is much like sitting in an office: you and your counselor see and hear each other and talk for the length of the session. Ask your counselor which video service they use and how your privacy is protected.

Making it work well

  • Choose a spot where you will not be interrupted. A parked car works if home is busy.
  • Silence notifications on your device.
  • Give yourself a few minutes before and after, instead of going straight from or into another task.
  • Have a backup plan, such as a phone call, in case the connection drops.

Where you need to be

Counselors are licensed by state. In general, you need to be physically located in a state where your counselor is licensed at the time of your session. If you split your year between Massachusetts and somewhere else, ask how that affects your appointments.

Is it right for you?

Online counseling suits many people and many concerns. It may not be the best choice in a crisis or when you have no private place to talk. Your counselor can help you decide. If you are in immediate danger, call 911, or call or text 988.
